Master's Degree

Master's degrees and Doctorate degrees are the graduate level degrees.

Master's degrees consist of a 2 year professional study on a specific academic subject. To enter a graduate program, a Bachelor's degree must have already been achieved. This means that the academic level of the typical Master's degree student tends to be higher, as they have already earned an undergraduate degree. Master's credits are often used by a graduate student towards a doctoral degree. The more 'academic' programs often require a Master's thesis, a very significant academic paper that demonstrates the professional level knowledge and abilities of the student.

Two of the most often earned Master's degrees are in Education and Business. One quarter of the Master's degrees given each year is the MBA, the Master of Business Administration. Some say this degree is becoming the standard for professional business persons. MBA programs teach students the basics of business issues and operations. These programs often are structured in ways that are very similar to modern business operations, in that students work in teams with other students on various projects.

Many grammar school and high school teachers, when they become employed by a school system, are required to have a Master's degree within a few years, and therefore the Master's in education is another largely sought after academic degree.

Should a person go for their Master's degree? Like any major decision, costs versus likely benefits should be appropriately weighed; such as if this degree is being paid for by your employer, you should really consider attending a graduate program. The benefits of having a Master's degree may not be immediately obvious or tangible for many persons. The differences between many Bachelor's degree programs and a Master's degree of the same discipline often is not too great. But, having a graduate level Master's degrees means that a person is at least a six year college educated individual. The likelihood of that person being more professional is high. This type of individual is more likely to 'go the extra mile'. Overall a Master's degree is will help others to see you as the professional person that you are.

As a note, graduate level credits tend to cost significantly more than the costs of undergraduate level education.
