Rent versus Buy

It is very tempting to buy a DVD, Video, Magazine, or Book that we come across that looks interesting. People many times do this before they really know what this item is, and if they will like it, especially if it is relatively inexpensive. When we are in this situation, we really should ask ourselves if this is something we could first check out of a library, or rent from a video store, before we buy it and maybe find it is not something we like, and sometime later just throw this item in the garbage.

For a book or movie that you may only read or watch once, it would be much more environmentally friendly to rent this first, especially if there is no cost involved, such as with a library. If the item does turn out to be something you will consume often, then you can buy yourself a copy. Chances are that your collections of these items would be reduced by following this suggestion.
